On Thursday, August 22, 2024, the entire academic community of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Universitas Jember, held a solidarity action for the constitution and democracy. This peaceful action, attended by hundreds of FISIP Universitas Jember students, featured a flag-raising ceremony with the flag at half-mast. On this occasion, the Dean of FISIP Universitas Jember, Dr. Djoko Poernomo, M.Si., CIQnR, CSBA., delivered a speech and read out the FISIP Universitas Jember’s statement of position, which stated:
We condemn all forms of orchestrated and constitutional manipulation of democratic procedures that have taken place and are ongoing; We reject all forms of autocratic legalism as a means of legitimizing power practices that undermine democratic values and the sovereignty of the people; We demand a useful and fair electoral process as a fundamental pillar of democratization; We urge the General Election Commission to adhere to the decisions of the Constitutional Court; We encourage the remaining civil society actors of democracy to consolidate and remain active in saving Indonesian democracy from extinction; For the sake of legal certainty and the constitution, we urge the House of Representatives to immediately halt the discussion of the Regional Head Election Bill; We urge the President of the Republic of Indonesia to instruct the police, the military, and state apparatus to guarantee and protect security and a peaceful atmosphere throughout the entire territory of Indonesia.
The reading of the FISIP Universitas Jember’s statement of position demonstrates a spirit of togetherness and serves as a form of empathy towards the community, in response to the destruction of the foundations of democracy and the constitution that serve as the pillars of the sovereignty of the Indonesian state.
