Universitas Jember (Unej) has reinstated the Computer Based English Proficiency Test (CBEPT) score requirement as a graduation prerequisite for its students. This policy is being reintroduced after a previous period of exemption.
The Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of Unej, Prof. Drs. Slamin, M.Si., Ph.D., explained that the reinstatement of the CBEPT score requirement aims to enhance students’ English language proficiency. “English language skills are crucial in today’s globalized era. By possessing strong English skills, Unej graduates will be better prepared to compete in the job market,” he stated.
The required CBEPT scores for students are as follows:
- Bachelor’s (S1) and Applied Bachelor’s (D4) Programs: minimum 450
- Master’s (S2) Program: minimum 475
- Doctoral (S3) Program: minimum 500
Students can take the English proficiency test at the Unej Language Unit (UPA Bahasa) or other institutions recognized by Universitas Jember. This regulation applies to all students who are declared to have passed (final assignment grade entry by Kombi) after July 31, 2024.
Prof. Slamin added that students who have not met the CBEPT score requirement can retake the test until they achieve the specified standard. “We provide students with the opportunity to take the CBEPT multiple times until they reach the required score,” he said.
The reinstatement of the CBEPT score requirement has been welcomed by a majority of Unej students. They believe that this policy will motivate them to study English more diligently. “I agree with this policy. With the CBEPT score requirement, I am more motivated to learn English,” said one Unej student.
