Jember, October 30, 2024 – The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Jember, held a guest lecture entitled “Japan’s Economic Diplomacy in ASEAN: Contributions to Economic Strengthening and Long-Term Development” in the FISIP UNEJ meeting room. The event was attended by approximately 100 offline students and 100 online students.

The event featured diplomacy expert Mr. Nakagome Kota, Vice Consul of the Consulate-General of Japan in Surabaya. As the speaker, Mr. Nakagome delivered a presentation moderated by Mr. Honest Dody Molasy, S.Sos, M.A., a lecturer in international relations at the University of Jember.

In his presentation, Nakagome described the cooperation between Japan and ASEAN through the Joint Vision Statement, with the vision statement of “Trusted Partners”. This cooperative relationship marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between ASEAN and Japan. Based on this statement, ASEAN and Japan have recommitted to developing a more meaningful, substantial, and mutually beneficial strategic partnership, with a focus on ASEAN unity and priorities.

Japan and ASEAN have built their relationship on three pillars through the “Fukuda Doctrine”: Heart-to-Heart Partners across Generations, Partners for Co-creation of Economy and Society of the Future, and Partners for Peace and Stability. Through these pillars, the speaker explained the interconnectedness of Japan and ASEAN, from fulfilling human resource needs to ensuring the sustainable future of the economies of both Japanese and ASEAN societies.

During the event, Nakagome also offered the MEXT scholarship, which is available to Indonesians who wish to study in Japan. In addition to offering the scholarship, he also explained the application process and provided tips for successful MEXT scholarship recipients. The presentation successfully captured the attention of the audience, most of whom were international relations students.

This event was very successful in providing a new perspective on ASEAN-Japan cooperation through a clear and detailed presentation. On the other hand, students also gained new insights into job opportunities and scholarship opportunities for career development, especially in Indonesia-Japan cooperation (Contributor: Afrisha HI ’23).
